"Pieris rapae", commonly known as the small white or cabbage white, is a widespread species of butterfly in the family Pieridae. This butterfly is well-known for its pale, creamy-white wings with small black dots on the forewings, which are more pronounced in females than in males. The tips of the forewings may also have a grey or black shading. It's a small to medium-sized butterfly, recognizable by its fluttering flight.
Originating from Europe and Asia, Pieris rapae has since spread to North America and other parts of the world, often becoming a common sight in gardens, fields, and open woodlands. It is particularly noted for its larval stage, where it can be a pest on cultivated cabbages and other brassica crops, hence the name "cabbage white."
Despite its reputation as a pest, the cabbage white plays a role in the ecosystem as a pollinator. It feeds on nectar from a variety of flowers and in doing so, contributes to the pollination of many types of plants. This butterfly's adaptability to various environments and its ability to colonize new areas make it a subject of interest in studies on biological invasions and adaptation.
