"Danaus chrysippus", commonly known as the plain tiger or African monarch, is a widespread species of medium-sized butterfly belonging to the subfamily Danainae in the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is well-known for its striking tawny-orange coloration with black and white spots on the edges of its wings, which provide a warning to predators about its unpalatable taste due to the toxins it accumulates during its larval stage from the milkweed plants it consumes.
The plain tiger is highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of environments ranging from agricultural areas to urban gardens across Africa, Asia, and parts of Australia. It is one of the first butterflies to appear in spring and one of the last seen in autumn. The adaptability of Danaus chrysippus to different habitats and its role as a pollinator make it a crucial component of the ecosystem, contributing to the health of the natural landscapes it inhabits. This butterfly's migration patterns and breeding habits also make it an interesting subject for studies in ecology and evolution.
